If, however, the coup government intends to remain in power for the foreseeable future then that should be opposed. If the coup government in Thailand had taken power in order to revitalize Thai democracy that would not have been a bad thing. Democracy was already effectively dead in Thailand before the coup. In Thailand, there was actual anarchy, not the "specter of popular anarchy".Īnd I do not attempt to justify dictatorship. The way to solve a political impasse in a parliamentary democracy is to hold new elections, but the Thai urban elite refused to allow new elections until the constitution had been changed to disenfranchise the rural poor. This lead to an irreconcilable political conflict that had prevented new elections from being held.
The majority in Thailand are the rural poor, but the urban elite are not willing to accept defeat at the polls. The government reportedly briefly blocked Facebook's operations in the country for allowing citizens to protest the takeover online, though the social network was back up after a half hour.

Since coming to power in a bloodless coup in May, Thailand's military junta has cracked down on media criticism of the new government, drawing international criticism from journalist and free speech groups. "This does sound like it could have come from one of El Presidente’s own edicts from the game," Kalypso Media Group Global Managing Director Stefan Marcinek said in a statement.
